Great Waste of Time
So my two-week vacation was just about to get boring when I discovered the next great Internet toy from Google. It is called Google Trends. It allows you to compare searches and news volume on any number of terms. It even tells you the most popular regions and cities for particular terms. Here are a few interesting examples.
>The Yankees and Red Sox are neck and neck for search and news volume for the past few years, except of course for that glorious 2004 World Series. The teams seem to have an equal following in the States. Internationally, however, the Yanks get more hits and more news in every country except Canada. Score one for the Canadians.
> Sex is more popular in Pakistan, Egypt, Vietnam, Iran, Morocco, India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Poland that it is in the good ole USA. We did not even make the top 10. The most over-sexed city in the world seems to be Delhi, India. Chicago is the only US city listed in the top 10. Figures. Some news story will pick up on that and blame Wheaton University, Billy Graham, and Billy Sunday for that.
> Nobody googles New Jersey more than the folks in Freehold, NJ. Why would you need to google it when you are already stuck in it?
> It seems that Chile and Mexico are more interested in Cushing, Oklahoma than our fellow Americans. Is this for business opportunities or Cushing High School futbol?
> And finally, if you have ever wondered where Dubya gets his information about Iraq, now you know. Washington DC records more searches and news about Iraq than any other region in the country. Can't you just seem him pouring over the latest intelligence reports and then checking GoogleMaps and GoogleNews to make sure its all accurate? I would.
Google will soon rule the world. What should we do about it?
